230 W leadless solder solar cell modules

Mitsubishi Electric developed a large power leadless solder solar cell module rated at 230 W. They achieved this output by improving the output of each module by increasing the module size. Due to a large output at 230 W, a system can be constructed with small number of the modules, thus reducing the process and cost.

Tera Hz Device

Researchers at Tokyo Institute of Technology developed a room temperature device that can directly generates ultra high frequency electromagnetic waves whose frequency exceed 1 tera Hz (1012 Hz). This frequency is between light and electric wave and being expected applications in transmit imaging and high speed and capacity communication, but has not been utilized due to lack of compact light source. The device is expected to contribute for expanding applications of the tera Hz waves.

エネルギ省の研究者は、植物の砂糖を炭化水素化合物に変える工程の触媒となる3つのバクテリア酵素を確認した。彼らは、Micrococcus luteus の3つの染色体集団をEscherichia coli の導入した。これらの染色体によって作られる酵素は、E. coliがグルコースから長いチェーン状のエチレン系炭水化物を化合することを可能にする。この長いチェーン状のエチレン系炭水化物を「クラッキング」と言う方法により短くし、リグノセルロース生燃料の生産に適切な短い炭化水素を得る。

超低温下で液体ヘリウムはスーパー流体になることが広く知られている。同様に固体ヘリウムは超低温下でスーパー固体になると予言され、ねじれ振り子実験での観察によって実際に存在するものと信じられている。しかし、アルバータ大学の研究者は、新しく設計されたねじれ振り子を使って実験した結果、観察された現象は、実際は量子塑性であると主張する。

SONY developed a module of the Li-ion rechargeable battery using LiCoPO4 as the anode. LiCoPO4 is characterized as high output/long lifetime/excellent thermal stability. The battery is rated at 1.2 kWh. High voltage/capacity applications are easily configured by connecting the modules in series and parallel.

Micro fluorescent glass capsule that contains a high concentration quantum dots

Researcher at AIST developed a fluorescent glass capsule that encloses multiple quantum dots without losing the fluorescent characteristics. They developed a three step synthesis method using the sol-gel method and succeeded to enclose CdSe/ZnS core shell type quantum dots in a glass capsule at a high concentration without losing the characteristics.

Instant observation of morphology change of metal surface in nano scale

Researchers at JAEA developed a device that can instantly observe the morphological change at the nano meter (one millionth of mm) scale in 10 pico seconds. They employed a simple optical interferometer that uses two mirrors. The system resolved melting and expansion of metallic surface by an infrared laser at the resolution on nano meter in depth and 10 pico seconds in time.

Researchers at Nagoya University succeeded mass production of the spherical molecular C60 fullerene that contains lithium ions (Li@C60) and determined the single crystal structure. This finding will accelerate of fullerene with metals for application in industries.
